Amber Feroz Spring/Summer collection

Opening with visuals by VJ Fusion, the Amber Feroz Spring Summer collection began with modern abayas carrying strategically placed revealing cuts and sleek designs. Models with shaylas covering their heads walked the ramp in light abayas of chiffon fabric and silk with minimal embroidery, focusing instead on the cuts and silhouettes.

Evening wear followed in a host of colors ranging from lilac, yellow, ochre, green, aqua and peach. Pantsuits, short dresses, harem pants as well as maxi dresses in soft silk featured asymmetrical cuts. Innovative beaded leather neckpieces and metal chains added a touch of bohemian glamour to the outfits. Necklines extended to fall at the back in tasseled ends as Grecian gowns were bunched at the hip to accentuate the female silhouette. Emphasizing on deep cuts, pantsuits in silk jersey were accompanied by embellished belts in complementary colours.A deep blue outfit carried a back paneling of bright green satin in an exciting twist. The outfits were enhanced by exquisitely designed shoes from designer footwear label, Paul & Betty.

Manish Malhotra closes the five-day event

Saving the best for the last, Manish Malhotra of Studio 8 presented his glamorous Spring Summer line at the finale of Dubai Fashion Week.

Billowy smoke led the way for the models as they walked the sleek black runway to a background of geometric mirrors. A skirt and bustier combination in shimmering black won audience appreciation with its wine colored trimming and flouncy material.

Bands of embroidered gold ran down the green velvet sherwanis donned by the male models. Worn with black and white patialas and jodhpurs with thin tapering legs, the outfits were accompanied by elaborate neckpieces in gold. Outfits with tri-colored bands were a runway fixture as anarkali salwar kameezes of pink, grey and orange were followed by lehengas in blue, green and teal.

In an experimental reversal of design, a salwar kameez of pale gold were embroidered with metallic blue and red thread to fantastic results. Employing zari work, tasseled ends, colorful baubles and gold embroidery, the tulle dupattas enchanced the regality of the outfits. Bands of velvet made their way into salwarkameezes, lehenga-cholis and sherwanis in a color palette of ivory, pale gold and silver.

Chantilly Lace & a Pretty Face by Bisma Ahmed

A former winner of Dubai Fashion Week - DFW’s Emerging Talent, Bisma Ahmed kick started Day 4 of Dubai Fashion Week with a 16 outfit collection entitled “Chantilly Lace & a Pretty Face” was a take on the famous French lace and its inclusion in Mughal fashion. The designer’s diverse cultural background manifested itself in her designs in the form of burnished gold work and heavy embellishments on the lace creations.

The fashion models were ushered in with a slideshow of France, the land of the Chantilly lace, as the smoke machine and Sanskrit chants set the stage for a dazzling display of creativity. Elizabethan fashion married Mughal silhouettes as the “B’Zma” collection fused the two cultures with a masterful stroke.

Khan used lace in varying intensities in all her creations, teeming the fabric with silk, chiffon and jacket, jersey silk. A teal sari decorated with silver appliqués and a metallic grey sari made entirely out of lace won appreciation from the audience as did the flowing anarkalis with their heavy embellishments and simple chiffon dupattas. Salwar kameezes in beige, blue and lavender were followed by luxurious lehengas in gold and silver adorned with heavy metallic embroidery giving the outfits a truly regal look.

Guests, who included fashion editors, stylists, and celebrities such as Brooke Burns ("Melrose Place," "Baywatch"), Bridget Marquardt ("The Girls Next Door"), Melinda McGraw ("Mad Men," "The Dark Night") and Charlotte Ross ("Glee"), roamed the loft-like space where the Sue Wong Spring 2011 Collection was presented on live models and installed mannequins surrounded by the designer's expansive modern art collection. Event sponsors included Napoleon Perdis, Matt Adams for Sally Hershberger, Famous Cupcakes, PAMA Liqueur, Hpnotiq Liqueur, Hansen's Soda, Vita Coco, Icelandic Glacial and Michael Antonio.

"Sue Wong never fails to make a woman feel glamorous and feminine in her dresses, and tonight was no exception. ... However; I never wanted to take this feather dress off!" said Burns.

The Shorts...and Boots...!

Longer days and hot nights call for shorter hem lines- but that doesn't mean we have to deal in our boots for flip flops! The shorts are no longer assigned to weekend chores, beach cover-ups and music festivals- they have found their way to the real catwalks of Hollywood. With a little stimulation from Daisy Duke, these girls show how to breathe new life into a summer wardrobe staple.

Add a black to your outfit, and you are routinely labeled "edgy"- but to me, there is amazing about these girls that are friendly and sweet. Maybe it's because instead of opting for a heeled boot, they went with a loose decent flat boot...or maybe it's to do with the softer shapes of their tops- either way, I'm coveting this look...but I may have to go back over it on a really hot day.

For a simpler version of wearing boots with your shorts, keep the height of your boot to ankle length. The leg-lengthening class alone should have you stepping up out to experiment with this look! At 5'1, Nicole Richie looks as leggy as Gisele Bundchen in all her 5'10 of glory! I love how erratic the ankle boots look with the relaxed tops that these girls paired with their shorts. You almost expect a tattered flip flop- but instead you get a sexy treat….!

Corporate clothing to be inspired by PV, Paula Cannon

Corporate clothing designer Paula Cannon predicts that we will see more knits, jerseys and flashes of colour in the Nation’s uniforms following her visit to Premier Vision, the twice-yearly international fabric fair. From coats to shirts the complete wardrobe goes knit next Season. Knits move away from their classic use and are used in more conventional tailoring shapes generally seen in woven fabrics.

The head designer at Coleshill-based Incorporatewear is just back from Paris where the dominant fabrics on offer were knits, lace, fur and velvet. Popular colour trends for autumn and winter 2012 included soft neutrals, 1970s Formica brights, mineral grey with sterling sliver, poetic pinks and professional navy, black and greys.

Paula believes these could easily transfer into corporate wardrobes for retailers, banks, airlines and other organisations that develop their brands by clothing their staff.

“While I doesn’t expect to see bank staff in pink suits, I think that the season’s bright colours will work well as discreet accents, for example as linings in more subdued coloured suits,” she said.

Premier Vision showcases new developments in fabrics and trims, and also more recently provides a shop window for manufacturers.

Clothing prices forecast to firm up

Rising prices of cotton are seen to hike the clothing prices. This is for the first time in the history of 18 years that clothing prices are depicting an upward move on a year on year basis, driven by the high cost of cotton and also when considering the fact that, VAT rates are to be hiked from 17.5 to 20 percent in January.

Cotton prices now rest at 15 year high levels, mainly due to loss of cotton crops, due to recent massive floods in China and Pakistan.

The impact of this hike in clothing prices will become apparent in the inflation rate, and is expected to cross the Government’s estimates of two percent.

High price of cotton coupled with increase in VAT rates from January, are expected to boost the clothing prices by almost eight percent, a leading retailer said. A few global apparel and lingerie brands, too have voiced their apprehension about rise in prices.

PM calls for amicable settlement to labour dispute

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has requested for an amicable settlement of the employer-employee row going on in the garment industries in india. He wanted that, all protesting workers should resume work, while the court should quash all the complaints that the employers lodged against these workers.

Sen who was speaking at the graduation ceremony at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh said that, he has urged the court to drop all charges against workers, while the factory owners should permit workers to rejoin their duties. He also urged the unions to abide by the labour law.

During July, the government fixed the new minimum wage for the industry at US $61 per month, which was much lower than the minimum wage of $93 demanded by the unionists, due to which hundreds of workers went on strike on September 13.

Though, the strikes ended on September 16, but the next day itself new industrial action stirred up, following the news of suspension of around 200 worker’s leaders on allegations of provoking the strikes.

The Premier said that, he signed some papers on September 26, which directs the court to drop all the allegations against workers and union representatives. The same documents also carry an appeal to all factory owners to reinstate workers to their duties.
