Underlying sales performance will improve in F11, Pacific Brands

Pacific Brands announced EBITA of $181.4m in line with guidance for the 12 months ended 30 June 2010 (F10). Second-half earnings were up 13.7% despite lower hedged exchange rates and more challenging retail conditions than in the previous year.

Margins were maintained, due principally to the savings from the Pacific Brands 2010 transformation program which is running ahead of plan while underlying sales for F10 were down by 5.9%. Cash flow was exceptionally strong and net debt was reduced substantially. The company also announced dividends are expected to be resumed following the 1H11 result, subject to performance, financial position and outlook at the time.

Pacific Brands’ Chief Executive Officer Sue Morphet said: “As indicated to the market at the half-year results, second half earnings were up but the full-year result was down on last year. We are pleased that margins – both gross margins and EBITA margins – held steady despitethe continuing difficult market conditions and adverse impact of currency. This evidences the strength of our key brands and the benefits of our transformation program. It is a clear sign that our strategy is the right one.

Postie sales up; Schooltex is to be expanded with PPGL

The national apparel and nursery equipment retailer Postie Plus Group Ltd has achieved positive earnings of $781,000 for the 2009-10 year. Whilst the pre-tax profit did not meet the company's expectations, it reflected flat consumer spending patterns.

The directors were pleased to see sales increase by 3% to $113m in a difficult retail environment, said the chairman Mr Peter van Rij, but deteriorating fourth quarter sales and the need to meet a very competitive market by reducing margin led to pre-tax profit easing by 6.5% over the previous year.

In what has been a difficult year it is pleasing to note that Postie has continued to increase market share in the apparel segment.

New import tariff to drive up winter-wear prices

Garment importers and retailer’s are accusing the government for bringing imports within coverage of a new taxation system, which is likely to hike the prices of winter-wear by around 20-80 percent, this season.

The Customs Department on July 15 decided to subject imported clothes to a tariff of JD one per kilo. Prior to this, the practice was that the Custom Department officials first computed the value of the imported goods, which thereafter were subjected to a tax of 20 percent on that value.

Importers claim that, the new tax of JD one per kilo would definitely be more than the 20 percent tariff, which was charged earlier. The new tax structure has caused the duties payable on imports to rise, and finally the customers will have to bear the burden of the same.

Garment importers earlier sounded a caution that, if the Customs Department adopts the weight formula, this would lead to a surge in the prices of winter-wears, for the reason that winter clothes are much bulkier as compared to summer clothes.

Apparel sector up in arms against port delays

Textile producers in countries under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) market are quite exasperated over inordinate delay in clearing of consignments at Mombasa port.

A apparel factory owner divulged that, for over a month, the ships conveying shipments to ports are made to linger in the mid-sea for 10 days prior to allowing them to berth.

Shortage of tools required to clear the shipments is elongating the clearance process for vessels by three to four days, he said and added that, the inordinate delay in delivery of consignments has time and again compelled the textile units to cease production, during the months of August and September, this year.

Govt lowers levy on export bills for RMG exports

According to experts, the government is not paying the necessary attention to the readymade garments (RMG) sector, which is the major source of Bangladesh’s export revenue.

But the recent decision of the government, to cut the levy on export bills by 0.1 percent to assist exporters to compete in the global market and also execute the new wage board award for apparel employees, has been fairly received.

The advance income tax (AIT) payable by RMG factories has been lowered to 0.40 percent. The government had formerly increased the AIT from 0.25 percent to 1.0 percent. Further, it was reduced to 0.50 percent after an appeal from the RMG employers.

As per the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), around 40 percent of the RMG factories will be shut down in the near future, if the government does not take the necessary action in time.

Govt closes two clothing units. 1,500 loose jobs

Two more textile plants were shut down in the La Vega Free Zone Industrial Park of the Northern part of Dominican Republic and this has led to the sacking of 1,500 employees.

The La Vega Free Zone Association stated that, several companies will shut down their units and sack thousands of employees in the coming days.

The two companies which were shut down were the F&J Textile Industry I and II. Both these companies had been functioning for over five years in La Vega.

The association also informed that the decision of shutting down these two plants was taken by Proindustria, due to the outstanding arrears on rent, these two plants owed to Proindustria.

Most of the businesses are unable to pay the rents because of the shutting down of their units or due to the small production orders which they are receiving.

Motor City Denim Co. by Joe Faris

Garment districts have long been associated with New York and Los Angeles, but a garment district in Detroit? Joe Faris, a Project Runway alum and metro-Detroit designer, has taken a first step towards establishing an apparel industry in southeastern Michigan with his new line, Motor City Denim Co. by Joe Faris, made entirely in his home state.

The line for men and women will include jeans, skirts, dresses, western shirts, T-shirts, outerwear and accessories. Branded "Industrial Couture" by Faris, the collection will mix high-fashion elements with industrial edge, such as an evening dress made of denim. The line, which will be ready for wholesale October 1, will begin arriving in stores in early 2011.

By partnering with TDIC, Inc., the designer and manufacturer of protective robotic covers for more than 30 years, in Sterling Heights, all it took was minor retooling of existing machinery, plus a couple of jeans-specific machines, and the factory was ready for production. Faris added Taylor-based Arrow Uniform as his denim-wash facility, plus local screen printers and embroiderers to create an all-Michigan production team.
