If you're not keen on doing full on and in-your-face fluoro à la Christopher Kane, but would like a nod to the trend, then why not wear it the subtle way. A touch of Neon in contrast coloured drawstrings, edges and fabric trims will keep you updated but not make you look like a fashion victim.

Fashion for the Legs - Global Hosiery Market Sees An Upswing

Fashion gives much focus on shape and structure enhancement. Hosiery, basically a leg wear, has become an integral part of fashion apparels. Hosiery includes tights (called pantyhose in US), stockings, knee and ankle-highs known as socks, opaques, sheers, and several others. Though popular among men and women, the latter segment dominates more than 80% of the global hosiery market. Targeting youth more, it makes a perfect addition for any clothing; be it a tube skirt or an oversized sweater.
Fashion for the Legs, Leg WearChanging nature of lifestyle is bringing in a sea change in the hosiery industry. Indians spend approximately USD27 a year for clothes, of which hosiery accounts for 0.9%. France, which makes just 1% of the global population, spends USD547 on clothes of which 6.3% is on hosiery.

Foreign apparel retailers wary of 30% sourcing clause

The notification issued by the Government of India earlier this month for allowing up to 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) in single brand retail puts a condition of 30 percent sourcing from local small and medium enterprises, in case of foreign investment exceeding 51 percent.

The 30 percent sourcing clause is likely to pose hurdles for foreign apparel retailers wanting to enter the Indian market. Several well-known brands like Abercrombie, Prada, GAP and Hennes & Mauritz are eager to open their outlets in India on their own.

Some global retailers who are already present in India may now look forward to increase their share in the Indian market. These include brands like Christian Dior, Zara, Canali, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo and Marks & Spencer.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Ms. Anku Nath, Director (Trade Policy Advocacy) at the US-India Business Council (USIBC), said, “The relaxation of FDI cap in any sector can be expected to attract additional investment, technology and expertise from global firms, and the same holds true for India’s apparel sector.”

Analysing the impact of the new policy on Indian apparel sector, she says, “Though it is difficult to predict the exact implications of the recent increase in FDI limits for the single-brand retail sector, we expect that global apparel companies will consider setting up or expanding their existing operations in India. Investors will find a skilled workforce to staff operations and a rising middle class of consumers eager to purchase their goods. India’s apparel sector stands to benefit as investment and world-class technologies are incorporated into new operations.”

The Revival of the Hi Top Sneaker

Not long ago I asked myself, what ever happened to sneakers? I had the impression that in the Blogosphere everyone was neglecting them (apart from classic Converse) and seemed to freak out at the mere sight of heels (freak out factor hightens if sole is red) the uglier and higher, the better. Look, heels! OMG -> screech -> faint! Then I thought, oh well, it's just a bunch of overexcited kids that think they are expected to do so. As a former plimsoll addict I thought, where has the cool and laid back plimsoll chic gone to? I read things like, „I don’t do sneaker“. Hell, why not, I thought, you might even look cooler, than in your heels, that make you look like cheap pray. Ok, so let’s take a closer look. Hi-tops obviously are the rage du jour! Converse fall in this category and who doesn’t like them. But the craze started last year with Isabel Marants' Beckett and its recent follow up for spring, the Willow. So with the Beckett and Willow everybody's freaking out because it's obviously leg lengthening due to the hidden wedge. Clever, ey? Imagine the sneaker without this exquisite feature, would it still be this popular with its air bag tongue? I think probably not. But there you have it, they are cute heels in disguise. Then there are what I call the mock sneaker, like Leather Crown, Golden Goose and the sneakers from the Blonde Salad girl, that come with heaps of studs. But would you really want to spend up to 300 Euro for these kind of sneakers? Then there are the multicoloured street savvy Nikes like the Dunk (you can even create your own colours on the Nike site) or the oldschool Nike Blazer that is quite popular right now. Don't let me even get started on adidas (I used to collect Adria, Berlin, Monte Carlo, Nizza...) This time, I think I might be going for New Balance -  with a touch of Neon.

What about you? Which sneaker girl are you?

Current Obsession: Denim Shirts

I haven't done that many posts on denim, although I wear LOADS! My current obsession are denim shirts. I like these simple ones from H&M with pearly popper stud fastenings. After I got a grey one that I've worn quite a lot recently, I bought this one in light washed blue which will look great come spring with white culottes and bermudas à la 3.1 Phillip Lim. There aren't that many in the webshop (yet), but go and check them out in their store, and you'll be able to choose from numerous colours and styles!

RBS opts out of saving UK apparel retailer Peacocks

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has withdrawn from the talks to rescue UK’s retail fashion clothing chain Peacocks, putting around 13,000 jobs on stake.

Peacocks started in 1884 as a ‘penny bazaar’ and now operates over 700 outlets in the UK and abroad.

Withdrawal of the RBS from negotiations has compelled the retail chain to declare that it would place itself under administration if it does not get new investors within the next 10 days.

RBS withdrew from the talks with the directors of the retail firm after not agreeing to settle the retailer’s debts against a stake in the business.

The retailer was trying to agree on new terms for £ 240 million of its £ 600 million debt. Peacocks owes over £ 100 million each to the RBS and Barclays.

While RBS has opted to withdraw from talks aimed at reworking the debt, Barclays has shown its readiness to support the retailer’s revival, mainly swayed by the encouraging trading figures that the retail chain has posted over the past some time.

1920's Art Deco glamour inspires Lisamichelle for Spring

The Lisamichelle Collection, a Los Angeles-based line of women's contemporary clothing and accessories, recently presented a new Spring 2012 collection at Runway Magazine's fashion show event at Drai's in Hollywood.

Inspired by the glamour and sophistication of the 1920's, the line includes styles ranging from feminine, draped, silk jersey cowl necked tops and dresses that can be worn in different ways, to flirty charmeuse pant jumpsuits, layered with jeweled and embroidered accessories.

"I wanted to focus on unique fabrications and artistic materials," Lisa Felsenthal, the collection's creative director, said. "Mixing materials like stained glass metallic jacquard, hand painted silk chiffon, and stone-encrusted trims, allow the collection to be truly unique and each piece to stand alone as a special item."

Lisa was inspired by twenties era flappers and art deco architecture. "I started to experiment with opposites and found that a beautiful story took shape. Chains complemented chiffon, sparkling jewels enhanced dark gemstones, and even embroidery took a new turn, when metal replaced thread on our embroidered belts. The new collection is meant to be playful, feminine and versatile." To bring the contrast of elements to the next level, photographer and former Heatherette designer, Traver Rains, shot the new look book at an architecturally modern house in the Hollywood Hills.

"The Day Before" by Loic Prigent

source: youtube

This is definitely a must see for everyone in or around fashion! The absolutely fantastic series "The Day Before" published by Arte and directed by Loic Prigent!
It captures 10 fashion houses 36 hours before the seasonal runway show with all the hustle and bustle that goes with it at this particular stage. You can catch a glimpse of the fittings in the ateliers with the designers making last minute alterations meaning more sleepless hours for the loyal and dedicated seamstresses, which is particulary mad in the Jean Paul Gaultier episode. Experience the work chemistry between Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler, watch Sonia and Nathalie Rykiel choose and discuss the runway looks and set up a giganto runway show, and experience iconic and never short of words Karl Lagerfeld for Fendi. I like the interaction between designer and stylist at Diane von Fürstenberg, where in one scene Diane makes a suggestion for a runway look, and the stylist rigorously dismisses her idea, stating that she already did that in the last show, with Diane respecting and accepting her decision.
This series is as enjoyable as it can get, it's great entertainment and a reality check for anyone wanting to enter the fashion world, and there is so much to discover that it's a pleasure watching them in repeat.

Box Set 1 features: Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel, Proenza Schouler, Fendi

Box Set 2 features: Versace, Diane von Füstenberg, Nina Ricci, Narciso Rodriguez, Jeremy Scott, Alexander Wang

Available at Collette.

Bangladesh govt must protect garment sector

If proper steps are not initiated to safeguard the domestic readymade garment (RMG) industry, the Bangladesh economy would be in trouble, Annisul Huq, President of SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has said.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of three international garment accessories and packaging fairs in Dhaka, he said the Bangladesh RMG industry employs about four million workers, with 90 percent of them being women. Thus, it is vital for the Government to safeguard the industry, he added.

The three international garment accessories and packaging fairs - Garmentech, Pacexpo and Yarn and Fabrics Sourcing Fair 2012 have been organized by the Bangladesh Garments Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) in alliance with Zakaria Trade and Fair International and ASK Trade and Exhibition Ltd.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said he is proud of the domestic garment, garment accessories and packing industry, as several small and medium scale units of these industries have developed so well that they have stirred upgradation of the country’s RMG industry.

Packaging industry was non-existent in Bangladesh during 1970s, but today, garment accessories and packaging industry has great prospects, he said, and expressed gratitude towards the industrialists of this sector for their valued contribution to the country’s economy.

India permits 100% FDI in single-brand retail

The Indian government has formally issued a notification permitting 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) in single-brand retail, from the earlier policy of 51 percent.

Until now, global retailers owning a single-brand had to partner with an Indian entity, as the cap on foreign equity was 51 percent.

However a clause which makes it mandatory for retailers to source 30 percent of their products sold from the Indian small/village/cottage industries may not go down well with those global retailers either planning to hike or mulling new investments.

According to the government, this move will help attract investments in production and marketing and encourage sourcing of goods from India.

This decision however, has paved the path for 100 percent FDI in multi-brand retail in the near future.

Pre Fall Collections 2012! Stop! Rewind! Pre Fall?

Celine Pre Fall 2012
3.1 Phillip Lim Pre Fall 2012

Stella McCartney 2012
Chloé Pre Fall 2012

Pre Fall 2012? What are you talking about?! It's not even proper Winter yet and here are the Pre Fall 2012 collections popping up everywhere! Come on! What is this? "Pre Fall" like the "Cruise" or "Resort" collections is an interseasonal collection that hits the shops in May. The smaller Pre Fall collections may be regarded as a teaser to the proper autumn/winter collections that are shown in March and are available before, well, fall. They don't involve the usual hustle and bustle of runway shows as the clothes are presented on static models. With Pre Fall the fashion industry cleverly bridges the gap between the spring/summer and autumn/winter collections. Whereas the resort collections have a raison d'être (jetting off to warmer climates during winter months), I guess the pre fall collections were created to secure the fashion houses' cash flow and get those credit cards bending in between the big seasons, and also give those editors and bloggers something to write about (great fillers if you don't know what to write about)! And living in the Northern Hemisphere where the weather doesn't change that dramatically year round, this is stuff you can wear regardless of seasons. Actually I admit it's quite wearable stuff. Confused? I bet! Do I sound like I'm talking to myself? Oh well, here is a small edit of my faves.

Seattle-based Nordstrom Inc announced it plans to open a new Nordstrom Rack in Tysons Corner, Va. The approximately 42,000-square-foot, two-level store is scheduled to open during fall 2012.

Bin these 2011 Trends in 2012!

After overindulging and watching too many reruns of James Bond and some Ab Fab during the holidays - let's talk about New Year's resolutions!!! No, just kidding, cause ultimately they are only made to be broken a nanosecond later. Spend your money on those ultra cool running shoes and a Stella running spandex outfit (to ring in the Olympic year and get that extra flab off) only to throw the stuff in the most deserted corner of your cupboard 2 weeks later, right? So, New Year's resolutions aside, it's time to put those trackie bottoms and sweaters (I mean the ones you were lying about in) away (no, wait, don't bag the trackies, I feel a revival coming along). It's a new year and it's time to make some sartorial choices. I'll start with last year's trends that I am not keen on seeing in 2012. Your choices might be different, but here are mine:

I know a lot of you like them but I don't: The Platform Creeper/Brogues hybrid with the colourful sole. Remind me of Clowns shoes, and Clowns are not funny. Choose between Brogues, Creepers or Espadrilles.

Mulberry Alexa: Cannot understand the fascination with this bag. It certainly isn't special when everyone's carrying it (quite a few tacky versions about, too). I think even Alexa is embarrassed by its popularity (although if she gets a fair share out of it, her bank account must make her smile). Time to put this one -  into the dustbag! Better dig out Mulberrys other girls like Phoebe, Jaquetta, even Roxanne!

Hermès Birkin Bags on 20 year olds: Makes me cringe whenever I see this (not the bag but the combination). Who are you fooling, it's probably most certainly Mums and it's a bag that doesn't suit this age. Go out and experiment, get some vintagy stuff and gradually up the bag ladder, live the life, and when you've ripened like a good wine and lived a bit, maybe then you deserve to carry this one.

Colour blocking: No really, we've had enough!

The ubiquitous "Henry Holland" hairstyle (you know that quiff) on men that comes with tight skinny jeans, vintage style half laced boots and long asymmetric flowing cardigans over low cut V-neck Tees. Oh, I forgot the cotton tote bag over the shoulder!

Oversized crop tops that are longer in the back and show the midriff.

Moonwashed jeans. Remind me of East German garb ca. 1989.

Burberry scarfs in my hometown Düsseldorf (or pick any other rich city in Germany where this seems to be an epidemic): When temperatures drop, please wear something different than the Burberry camel check scarf around your neck. I get tired of counting them in the streets. I know you want to be recognized by the "right" tribe with this "status symbol", but your fellows drive to nearby Roermond Outlet where they bulk buy them half price along with those Ralph Lauren Polos. Please stop this Burberry abuse! Come on, be a rebel, Burberry also does other nice colours and stuff, you know?!

Did I forget something? Let me know!

Fashion talk - Is this a trend?

Tucking in shirts only in the front be a trend?

I don't think that this is a trend; it's just something you do when you consider the shirt is better tucked in or just left out. It’s nice when it seems effortless, but when you go through town and see everyone is doing this same thing...

You can find this type of style among the teens and even for few, this might be a habit. Any way it not so vulgar and any one can try this (both male and female).

Indian apparel exporters to face new competition

Along with the changing global scenario, India apparel exporters may not have to face competition from China, but from three other countries – Bangladesh, Vietnam and Indonesia, according to experts.

The three Asian countries are more efficient and cost competitive in apparel production and Indian apparel exporters run the risk of losing their market share to these countries, they warn.

“Global prices of textile products including apparel have declined and demand also continues to decrease, mainly due to the slowdown in the economies of large importing countries in the West. In such a situation, competition to Indian garment exporters arises from countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam and Indonesia, which are more efficient and cost competitive in apparel production,” Mr. DK Nair, Secretary General of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), told fibre2fashion.

“As of now, we run the risk of losing our market share to these three countries. Contrary to the general perception, China may not be our major competitor in global markets in the coming years because of their internal problems,” he adds.

“In design, quality and other aspects, Indian apparels can effectively meet competition from any country. However, price competitiveness will be the principal determining factor in bagging export orders,” he opines.

Indian apparel retail giants continue to expand

While the world is apprehending a slowdown in the midst of ongoing financial crisis in Europe and the US, big apparel retail firms in India are continuing to expand in the country.

Apparel retailer Shoppers Stop has opened 11 stores in the current financial year, taking the tally of its outlets to 49. Reliance Trends, another major apparel retailer opened 30 new stores in 2011.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr. Govind Shrikhande, Managing Director of Shopper’s Stop Ltd., explained, “Although the short-term market conditions appear tough and uncertain, long-term prospects are bright. It is because retail market in India is large and the share of organized retail is minimal. The multiple advantages of favourable demographics, income growth and increasing aspirations provide tremendous potential for growth of organized retail in India.”

Mr. Shrikhande believes 2012 will be better for apparel retailers. He avers, “Apparel retail has suffered a lot during April-December 2011, due to the twin blows of rise in cotton price and the levy of excise duty on apparels. Both these factors impacted retail prices by 15 to 20 percent, resulting in loss of sales volume, which in turn, resulted in higher inventories and loss of profits.”

“Compared to this, 2012 should be better as cotton prices have softened and Government is expected to rollback the excise duty. This would help in reducing retail prices on apparel by at least 5-8 percent, and thus revive volumes once again,” he adds.Link

Mr. Arun Sirdeshmukh, CEO of Reliance Trends, agrees, “The term slowdown applies to some segments and not to others. For large format retailers like us, as long as we have good quality affordable clothing and we remain connected with consumers, people welcome us. There will be ups and downs in sentiments but the fundamentals will remain and we do not see any reason for us to slow down at all. Fundamentally, there is nothing that changes our view. Our business outlook for the next two years is very bullish.”

Icebreaker merino is cool in the heat, highly breathable to prevent the clamminess and overheating associated with synthetics, soft, non-itch, sun safe, fire safe and easy care. It resists odor, and can be worn for days – sometimes weeks – without washing, which makes it ideal for travel.
