Full Beards are the Punk

The Dude Beard

The Karl Marx Beard
The Lumberjack Beard

Images sourced from the The Nyanzi Report and The Sartorialist.

It's been going on for a while now. The full beard thing. Have you noticed it on men? The once stubbly hipster beard that comes with black Wim Wenders specs has grown into a full one. There's the ZZ Top versions that are long and pointed, the lumberjack ones and groomed versions. A full beard can make a young face look more manly and make a manly face even more masculine. My man has grown a massive one as well, it's quite Afghanistan and certainly doesn't go unnoticed. It also involves a different kind of grooming. You have to cut the hair hanging over the top of the upper lip, you know why. So why are men doing it? Obviously not for the ladies. It's prickly and it's not good for my skin. Need a peeling? I get it for free. More like derma erosion. I hope it's a seasonal thing, and as soon as the sun comes out and the temperatures rise it will come off! Are you keen on it?

Aussie retailer Specialty Fashion to shut 120 outlets

Specialty Fashion Group (SFG), an Australia-based women’s apparel retailer, will close around 120 of its outlets within the next three years, as it is enduring the most adverse retail atmosphere so far.

According to its latest half-yearly review statement, the group which runs chains like Millers, Katies and La Senza, witnessed a 64 percent slump in its profits during first half of the current fiscal that began on July 1, 2011.

The company does not expect the economic conditions to improve much during the second half of the current fiscal, as there are no indications of the consumer demand perking up in short-term.

The retailer has already pulled down shutters at seven of its outlets in 2012 and is likely to shut another 15 outlets by June.

SFG Chief Executive Gary Perlstein said the company will remain steadfast to its policy of revamping the business with innovation, discipline and expansion of sales channel, thereby sustaining the group’s financial strength in short-term and preparing for long-term growth.

Best of British

Did I say I wasn't celebrity obsessed? Oops. Oh well, I guess I am not that impressed by some movie star clones and artificial manufactured singing sensations, but I am definitely music obsessed. So this weeks appearance of Blur at the Brit Awards (even though Damon's voice was quite crappy) got me excited and brought back some great memories of how we used to party away to some of their great brit pop tunes in the 90s. Yes, they are ageing and making cheese (that's what ageing musicians like to do, or want to grow wine like mine. Merlot, please!) but they can still rock a great party! And they are rocking it in Hyde Park this August at the Olympics closing ceremony with New Order and The Specials (ace!) There's still enough time to get that voice back on track, Damon.

Indian apparel retail sales to decline in S/S 2012

Indian garment retailers are likely to witness their sales going down in the Spring-Summer 2012 season.

The good sales clocked during the end-of-the-season-sales (EOSS) last month mean that the consumers may not make their usual number of purchases during the approaching season.

The weakening of Indian economy, high inflation, the continuation of excise duty on branded garments and high cost of raw materials are the other factors that are likely to affect apparel sales during the forthcoming season.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr. Rahul Mehta, President of the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), said, “The slackening of Indian economy, plus the high inflation, has definitely made an impact on the overall sentiment that is prevailing in the market. It has made apparel a discretionary purchase and therefore it can be postponed and purchases can be put on hold.”

“The situation is further worsened due to the specific effects of excise duty and high raw material costs. All these factors added up to give us some of the lowest results in the July-December period of last year. This can partly be confirmed by the sales during EOSS period in January, where most retailers have declared very good uptake. This indicates that consumers were postponing their purchase and purchased during EOSS in good measure because of the discounted prices. Even foreign brands have offered discounts up to 70 percent in their EOSS,” he adds.

Some Crazy Stuff from NYFW

Marc Jacobs left me surprised and confused with
his least commercial collection to date. Bizzare.

doing the splits. Ouch!
Betsey Johnson

Flannel cut out fox shawls at Thom Browne
Thom Browne

I thought I'd never say this, but what was this Marc Jacobs? Usually I can spot dozens of items in his collection that prove to be big hits, but this collection left me slightly confused. Pilgrim shoes, huge witchy hats, babuschka doll silhouettes over unflattering cropped pants. I mean they might suit the fairytale theme, but if they look unflattering on the models, mere mortals in the real world will stay well away from this. Or was he hiding the proper garments underneath for a secret after runway show for buyers only? There certainly was enough room...
Then there was crazy Betsey Johnson doing the splits at the end of her show. Wow, I hope I'll be able to do this at her age. Bonkers but funny!
And then there was Thom Browne with his Lady Gaga-esque collection. Yes, it was very strange. But those cut out flannel fox shawls with dangling legs made me smile!
