Industrial Chic: Foekje Fleur Bottle Vases

We know Foekje from our very fun Rotterdam Stardumb days, and when I saw these vases she had created a while ago I thought what a brilliant idea - turning trash into something really beautiful. Foekje modeled these matte bisque porcelain bottles from waste she found along the banks of the river Maas in the Netherlands. You could even admire and buy them in Paul Smith's store in London recently! Pop a little flower in a single one or stand them without flowers in a colourful collective for some industrial chic - I think they are some of the most beautiful and original vases around!

Check out Foekjes website where you can buy the bottle vases and other fantastic objects she creates here

Happy Queens Day to everyone in the Netherlands!

Indian brand Classic Polo plans stores in tier II towns

Classic Polo, the casual menswear brand of India-based Royal Classic Group (RCG), will open more outlets in Tier II and Tier III cities across India.

Ms. Usha Periasamy, VP Operations and Brand Head, RCG (Classic Polo), told fibre2fashion, “We plan expansion in Tier II and III cities as there are huge growth opportunities in these cities. In the first phase, we will open outlets in southern Indian cities. Towns in eastern India will be our next target.”

Explaining about the target customers and growth potential, she says, “Our target customers are those in the age group of 18-35 years. There is good growth potential for a casual wear brand like us due to a number of reasons.”

“Firstly, there are very few national players and mid-price segment is almost vacant. So, mid-price segment has a huge scope to grow and sustain. Secondly, 65 percent of India’s population is below 30 years as per the census and therefore a ready market is available.”

“Thirdly, sports enthusiasm and health consciousness is witnessing a rapid growth in recent past, which makes for a good potential market. Lastly, there is a good amount of market awareness, which removes the need to educate the customers from scratch,” she explains.

Sharing about the brand’s current retail presence, she says, “Classic Polo brand is offered in 50 Exclusive Brand Outlets (EBOs), around 3000 leading Multi Brand Outlets (MBOs), some Large Format Stores (LFS) and an e-commerce portal.”

We Are 5 Years Old!

No, not this blog, but these 5 white shirts from COS! COS has re-issued them for their 5 year anniversary. And now guess what! Somewhere hidden in the depths of my cupboard I fished out No 3, yep, the one with the bib front (I had a serious bib front phase at the time!). It actually still has the tags on it. Don't know why I have never worn it, but it's great quality. The new version has gone up by a 10er! I think I like mine better though with the quirky gathered button fastening at the bottom...

Any relicts with tags on in your cupboard?

Hamburg meine Perle!

Have a great one!

New incentive scheme to help Turkish apparel makers

A new incentive scheme announced by Government of Turkey will benefit garment manufacturers, according to the Turkish Clothing Manufacturers Association (TGSD).

For the new incentive scheme, the Government has divided all provinces in Turkey into six groups on the basis of socio-economic development. The Government’s incentive support would be the most to those provinces falling in the sixth group, mainly comprising of poorer eastern and southeastern provinces.

For investments made in the sixth-category provinces from January 1, 2012, the Government will pay the employee insurance costs on the minimum wage for 10 years.

The new incentive scheme would provide more breathing room to Turkish apparel industry, said Sami Kariyo, who is on the Board of Directors of the TGSD.

Speaking at an event in relation to the 5th Istanbul Fashion Apparel Conference to be held on May 3-4, 2012, Mr. Kariyo said, the new scheme will help Turkish manufacturers to become competitive with China, where labour costs in the textile and apparel sector are in the range of US$ 300-500. The incentives provided by the Government would bring down the labour costs in 5th and 6th category zones to around US$ 450, he added.

At present, there are 1,500 Turkish apparel brands that have an overseas presence and the TGSD projects this number to grow to 10,000 within a span of few years, Mr. Kariyo said.

The Lacoste Revolution

Maybe it's time to grow up, or maybe not just yet! Lately I can't seem to get this Lacoste Live Varsity Jacket out of my head. It keeps popping up everywhere I turn my head. Normally I am absolutely no fan of big obvious Logos strewn over clothes, hell, I am not even a big label freak, I go for the look and feel of things and am very much influenced by music. Now the Logo of these Lacoste Live Jackets is like totally in-your-face but somehow I am liking it (unlike the super sized Ralph Lauren polo player..Yuck Yuck). I really don't mind a Lacoste crocodile, I have got some ancient polos way back in my cupboard (don't know whether the croco is looking in the right direction though, after all they were from Morocco), it breathes Roland Garros to me (Henri Leconte used to wear these), and I think I'd make this blown up crocodile some shades! Lacoste Live is taking the classic pieces and giving them a twist. Or let's put it like this: Lacoste is getting young, fresh and street savvy! You will find classic polo shirts, but with a leopard collar! Not a bad job Lacoste, you are making me go check it out in the flagship store, so you are obviously doing something right by attracting folks who are not into playing golf anytime soon...

Prada revved it up at their s/s 2012 runway show with some ultra cool hot rod classic car prints, most notably the Prada cadillac print leather skirt, and what went down the runway with a loud roar, is proving to be one of the most popular and heavily featured items in editorials and on magazine covers across the globe. Once again, well done Miuccia!

Fashionable workwear trousers made from soft fabric

MASCOT launches new workwear trousers range. Good fitting in new durable material. A casual style that meets a modern universe. These key phrases are characteristic of the trousers in MASCOT’s line MASCOT ROCKS, which are made from the unique material Tencel.

Tencel is a fiber extracted from eucalyptus trees and is commonly best known within the sports world. Tencel is often used in professional sports clothing because the material is both good for absorbing sweat and moisture and also for cooling the skin.

Although you may not be a top athlete your job is probably, at times, also physically demanding. Like a sportsman you may have experienced that it can be difficult to get moisture away from your body when you are physically active while working. Therefore Tencel is a good material to use in work clothing and it is one of the reasons why MASCOT has chosen it for the new work wear trousers.

Tencel is also considerably durable, soft and comfortable fabric to wear. This means that you can work a full day at work in trousers that are just as comfy as your home casual wear. The trousers have a good fit and trendy visual effects, such as reflectors at the back of the trousers. You can combine the trousers with a gilet or shirt from MASCOT ROCKS or even one of the new shirts from MASCOT CROSSOVER, to create a great look for spring.

‘US Missy Standard' avatars to be on display at Texprocess

Ed Gribbin, President Alvanon Inc has been invited to speak at the opening Product Development Technologies session of Texprocess Americas Symposium 2012, on Tuesday 24th April at 9.30am to 11.30am. His presentation will reveal how the latest 3D avatar technology, based on the shape of “real” US consumers, is being integrated into the product development process to create and accelerate the development of better fitting fashion.

He will explain how virtual men’s, women’s and children’s avatars can be utilized at every stage of the development process from concept sketching and pattern design through to sampling and 3D try-on.

In addition to the symposium, Alvanon will be exhibiting its latest range of fashion sizing and fit tools at the Texprocess tradeshow, Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th April. It will showcase its recently launched “US Missy Standard” avatars and AlvaForm technical fit mannequins based on the dominant body shape of “real” US women and incorporated by the ASTM’s subcommittee D13.55 for Body Measurement and Apparel Standards into the ASTM International Standard D5585. Alvanon analyzed thousands of 3D body scans of American women aged between 25 and 45 years and identified two dominant shape types, “straight” and “curvy”.

Alvanon’s team of morphological experts used the data to generate the computer based avatars and physical technical fit forms to accurately and realistically represent the dominant body shapes across the full range of US sizes from 2 to 14. The comprehensive Alvanon product range can be seen at BOOTH 3453.

Got this fabulous soft leather Biker jacket at Zara and it fits like a glove. Damn it Zara, you've also made it in cream!

Five inspiring women over 50

We’re lucky enough to live in an age of some seriously inspirational older women, who have done much to prove that reaching 50 doesn’t mean an end to glamour, success and sophistication.

Recent research has shown that only a third of women aged 50-74 consider their age when shopping for clothes – a figure that stacks up when we consider the number of glamorous older women who have been given prominent modelling contracts for major high street retailers in recent years. This surge in 50+ role models means that older women are now investing in trendier pieces, and steering clear of the dowdy clothes that were previously the staple of the mature women.

Here are some of the women we have to thank for blazing a trail for 50+ style and glamour:

Jerry Hall

The former Mrs Jagger still looks amazing, and proves that glamour is often as simple as a slick of red lipstick. Her style is simple and chic, and includes black suits and tailored jackets.

Helen Mirren

Dame Helen has been flying the flag for over-50’s style for many years, and still looks fantastic, as some of her recent bikini shots revealed. She nails red carpet glamour by refusing to shy away from showing off her assets, without being inappropriate. She looks great in evening maxi dresses with classic accessories.

Anna Wintour

The editor of US Vogue, Anna Wintour always looks stylish and perfectly turned out. She favours tailored clothes with sharp lines, like pencil skirts, but is also known for her huge fur coats, shades and trademark blunt bob. She is living proof that style, glamour and success are more potent than ever after 50.

Kim Cattrall

In her role in Sex and the City, Kim was always the sexy one – and she’s just as glamorous in real life. She pulls off the sexy look brilliantly, with low plunging necklines and fitted dresses.

Diane Keaton

Diane is known for her stylish and effortlessly cool take on menswear, and she still looks as fabulous as ever. She wears hats and masculine tailoring, pulling it all together with a great pair of heels.

With her M&S campaigns, Twiggy has bounced back into the spotlight as a stylish 50+ lady. She’s been credited with helping older women feel that they can still wear fashionable clothes, and look fantastic in the process.

Yesterday I had following conversation...

... with my lovely 5 year old daughter, when she noticed the fur lined hood of my parka (after a sniff of spring the temps have unfortunately plummeted):

"Mummy, that feels so lovely and soft. Is that fur?"

Um, yes.

"Is it warm?"

Yes, very warm actually.

"Can I have it when I'm big?" (At this point of conversation she always aks me this)

Course you can.

"What kind of fur is it?"

Bunny fur. (Feeling a bit guilty)

"From how many bunnies?"

Um, um, not that many I reckon. (feeling more guilty)

"Mummy, I hope it's not from the Easter Bunny!!!"

NOW I feel guilty!

Happy Easter Holidays!
