Atelier GARDEUR jeans made of controlled organic cotton

Atelier GARDEUR will for the first time be presenting men and women’s jeans made of organic cotton certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Deliveries will go out as a flash range in October 2012. “As was already the case with our established Fairtrade Denim, the uninterrupted transparency of the seal convinced us here,” says Gerhard Kränzle, CEO at GARDEUR GmbH.
“This means the GOTS-certified denims made of organic cotton perfectly supplement our wide range of sustainably produced products.”

The GOTS seal stands for high ecological standards as well as the meeting of social responsibility criteria along the entire supply chain – from cotton farmers, the spinning and weaving mills, production through to logistics. For instance, GOTS clothing must consist of at least 90% natural fibres, at least 70% of which must come from organic cultivation. In production the seal for instance ensures the reduced use of chemicals, energy and water. Annual, sometimes unannounced audits ensure the observance of strict certification criteria.

A Charity by 8 Ball for Topman T-shirt Collection

UK fashion house Topman has released a series of four tees in a bid to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

8 Ball, one of the country’s leading online t shirt retailers, has openly expressed its support for the venture and believes that the move will encourage more clothing companies to develop unique collections for good causes.

The t shirts in question feature designs inspired by musical instruments and were created by Topman’s very own in-house artists. £5 from every sale will go towards the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Representatives from the charity itself have expressed their delight at the fashion giant’s decision to launch the fundraising campaign, with its CEO Simon Davies commenting that he and his team hopes to make the partnership ‘a huge success’.

A representative from 8Ball.co.uk believes that the promotion should inspire other t shirt retailers to consider how they can do their bit for a charity of their choice.

Elisabeth Moss Debuts Blonde, Supershort Hair!

Elisabeth Moss Debuts Blonde, Supershort Hair!

Peggy pulled a Miley!

On Tuesday, Mad Man star Elisabeth Moss hit the red carpet in NYC at the premiere of For a Good Time, Call. But the Emmy-nominated star, 30, barely looked like herself, thanks to a drastic new hairdo: Moss chopped off her normally chin-length, brunette locks into a short -- and very blonde -- new 'do.

For her big makeover reveal, Moss wore a sexy, form-fitting black lace dress and nude heels. See more photos of Elisabeth Moss' makeover.

"I wanted to do something really different," Moss told Us Weekly on the Grey Goose-hosted red carpet. And, as the saying goes, Moss joked that, "so far," she's having more fun as a blonde -- even if Moss still can't go incognito. "People still recognize me because I always looked so different from Peggy before," she said.

Moss' future on Mad Men was very briefly in question among fans of the acclaimed AMC series shortly before the season five finale -- when her character, copy chief Peggy Olsen, left the advertising firm of Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce. But Moss -- who divorced Saturday Night Life's Fred Armisen in 2010 -- has signed on for two more seasons of the smash.

Trainee pattern-makers step onto NZ fashion stage

The time-lapse between learning to sew the first stitch and seeing your garment on the runway at New Zealand Fashion Week is usually a multiple of years, but for trainee pattern-makers Kapi Fonua (19), Kei Ho (30) both of Auckland, and Tanya Jeffrey (27) of Wellington, it’s taken just 18 months.

All three will be sitting front-row at the opening Designer Selection show at New Zealand Fashion Week when their elegant, white, classic-contemporary dresses, crafted from the uniquely-rippled toilet paper, step onto New Zealand’s most glamorous fashion stage.

19,500 lineal metres of Kleenex Cottonelle toilet paper went into 34 exquisite paper dresses made by talented young Diploma students from NZ Fashion Tech, at their Auckland and Wellington fashion schools.

Only three would make the cut.

Judges, Liz Findlay from Zambesi, fashion photographer Marissa Findlay, NZ Fashion Tech Director Kevin Smith, Michele Bollinger from Kimberly-Clark New Zealand and Deb Bauer from Kimberly-Clark Australia, the makers of Kleenex® Cottonelle® toilet paper, were up for the task.

And the winners are … Kapi Fonua of Auckland. Born in Tonga, Kapi remembers the lace in the white dresses he saw at church on Sundays. After moving with his family to New Zealand as an 11 year old, one of his fondest memories is going to the beach at Christmas where he would climb among the pohutukawa trees. Both memories are now stitched into Kapi’s work of fashion art.

Tanya Jeffrey from Wellington is a fan of sci-fi. Influenced in her fashion style by the movie ‘Blade Runner’, Tanya is inspired by heroine Rachel and the futuristic sets in the design of her retro-contemporary, head-turning toilet paper dress which shows where strength and softness meet.

Kei Ho, found his design inspiration in cup cakes. He pictured a tea party celebrating the flowering of the Royal Water Lily. Kei wanted the playful layering of the skirt of his air-woven toilet paper dress to allude to the silhouette of the lily, the pleating to mimic the paper cases, and the bodice to swirl like ribbons of icing.

Intensive net holes over specific parts allow skin to breathe effortlessly despite hot and humid weather. Mother of Pearl

I've been following Maia Norman's label Mother of Pearl for a while now, and I love her concept of taking the oppositional forces of fashion and technical sportswear and combining them into a super luxury collection. It's quirky and fun but not überdramatic, and the fact that each season she works together with a different artist makes it even more special and exciting. Beeing Damien Hirst's wife, obviously she lives and breathes art, so this doesn't come as a surprise, but the way the collections turn out under these collaborations, with their unusal prints, intricate cuts and luxurious fabrics, is all the more beautiful. It's that I don't care, I'll do what I like attitude that I love, and that's how the collections turn out in the end. For her Fall 2012 collection she collaborated with New York based artist Fred Tomaselli on a series of prints and for Resort 2013, Gary Hume's floral canvases and pola bears were translated onto fabrics. Norman says, that in future she'll be focusing on less established artists. Well, I am quite certain looking forward to this!

Ethical Clothing Australia Accredits 27 New Brands

Ethical Clothing Australia has reached a record number of ethically accredited Australian clothing and footwear businesses, having accredited 27 new brands and manufacturers since the beginning of July 2011.

The organisation has been encouraged by the number of businesses seeking accreditation, despite of the current difficult retail climate, and is seeing a diverse range of applications; from emerging designer such as So Stella, through to iconic brands like Akubra. This takes the total number of ethically accredited businesses to a record of 75.

The recent boost in the number of businesses applying for accreditation is due to several reasons, one of which is increased consumer awareness of ethical manufacturing and interest in supporting businesses that make their clothing and footwear ethically.

Research conducted by the Mobium Group in 2009 has also shown that there is a growing market for consumers who want sustainable and ethically produced products, and that the Australian market was worth $19 billion in 2009 and $27 billion in 2011.

Interestingly, and as a comparison, the food industry has also experienced an increase in consumer interest for ethically produced goods. Fairtrade recently reported that Australian consumers’ support of Fairtrade Certified products continues to grow, with sales rising almost 40% in 2011 on products such as coffee, chocolate and tea, as well as cotton. This represents more than triple the global increase amount of 12% for the same period.
